Inspired by classical architecture detail
Classical architecture dates back to the Greco Roman time of the Mediterranean world. It was based on exacting principles and rules which exuded elegance and harmony with precision and accuracy in procedure, thereby begetting some of the most astoundingly beautiful edifices known of all time.
A prevalent feature of decorative detail during this time was the Acanthus leaf which has been reinterpreted in many forms. One excellent example of the curling Acanthus leaf is on Corinthian columns which grace many capitals.
I have been a fan of the Acanthus for many years and have practiced sketching them since there are literally hundreds of ways they are translated in design.
While on a trip in Rhode Island I purchased some gorgeous translucent beads with the Acanthus leaf in relief with a patina which gave the engraving depth. I absolutely fell in love with them. The sight of them hearkened back to the exquisite depictions seen in many Roman buildings and stonework.
Inspired by these beads, one tear-drop and the other round, the process of sketching concepts of a necklace began. Oftentimes, components used in the design process exude a clear message of how to implement them in an orderly and systematic way. Due to the weight of the beads, my mind’s eye could see a long elegant necklace with an airy structure and shapes that mimicked the beads, creating a sense of cohesion while maintaining balance and symmetry. The large drop-shaped bead became the focal point with a dangling acanthus fringe mimicking the relief pattern on the bead surface. The large round beads created weight within the necklace structure and provided balance. The links around the necklace repeat the round and drop shapes, with the round shapes being filled with netting to give it a gossamer thread-like appearance like the scroll work on the beads.
Taking the time to study the components of a design and sketching the concepts pays large dividends in the end. It strengthens the purpose as well as defines the proportions and aesthetic details so that the harmony of parts come together gracefully.
Finally, it also helps to carefully choose beautiful components that make the heart sing with joy since it further incentivizes inspiration and is a pleasure to embark on the endeavor of design.
